- Timing is everything when it comes to computers, literally. And, while timing is at the heart of every calculation a computer does, keeping track of what time it is in the human world can be a little bit messier. Because of variations in hardware and especially if a system is virtualized, a computer's sense of time can drift away from being correct. To counter this, we can use software that checks in with time servers periodically and corrects a system's time if it's strayed too far away from the consensus. This is accomplished using a protocol called NTP or Network Time Protocol. Systems that provide time to other systems, called time servers, ultimately get their information from trusted time sources, like atomic clocks, GPS clocks and so on. Systems directly connected to these sources are called Stratum One servers and in order to spread out the demand on these systems, other time servers connect to them to share the correct time with clients.
