Using GRUB

- [Instructor] In the past, there were multiple different bootloaders used to boot linux. ISOLINUX was used to boot from a cd drive. LILO or Linux Loader was used to boot some distributions. And GRUB was used to boot others. LILO was specific to Linux, and used Linux things for devices. GRUB came from the GNU project, and is short for Grand Unified Bootloader. As it wasn't a Linux program, it used its own device naming scheme. Legacy GRUB carries the version number of 0.97. It has been replaced by GRUB2, which is a complete rewrite. GRUB Legacy supports single and multi-boot environments, loading of a configuration file, and it provides a boot menu, and a command-line interface. It also supports loading kernels out of many different filesystems, including those of DOS and Linux, as well as supporting and loading of compressed kernels.
