- [Instructor] Not all footprinting and reconnaissance involves highly technical skills or tools. Many times a preliminary evaluation of a target can be achieved using low tech skills. Competitive intelligence is used in business to help a company learn about its competitors in order to make better business decisions. By gathering information about products, services and customers, a company is able to face business challenges with more direction. Competitive intelligence uses standard search methods and is completely legal as opposed to industrial espionage which uses illegal methods to obtain intellectual property and trade secrets. Ethical hacking uses the same methods as competitive intelligence to gather information. Facts about target can be found using publicly available sources.
