- [Instructor] On Debian and Ubuntu systems, Aptitude provides an interactive environment to work with packages. Like Apt, it works as a front end to depackage, and it gives you an interface to manage and explore packages directly. In this video, I'll show you a few basic tasks with Aptitude, and I encourage you to dig into the man pages, for a deeper look. To use Aptitude, we need to make sure it's installed, so I'll do that with my current package manager. With apt install, aptitude. Once that's done, I'll start it up with Aptitude. Here in the interface, along the top, there's a menu of options. We can click on these items if the terminal supports mouse input. Or, use control T to toggle the menu, and then navigate around with the arrow keys. Moving around in here, we can see the shortcut keys assigned to various functions, like to install packages that have been marked to install, or to update the list of packages.
