Assess mics for tone and transients

- [Instructor] Before we jump into why mics work and why we should be able to predict how they might sound on a specific instrument, listen to the following mics and take note of the differences in how they sound. We'll cover the technical differences later in this course, but for now pay attention to what you hear and do your best to describe what you're hearing. I like to use acoustic guitar for my comparisons because it has a clean transient attack and a full-bodied tone. Listen to these examples and assess these characteristics: High-frequency content, is there a good representation of the upper frequencies between four and 10 or 12 kilohertz? Do they sound clean and crisp, or do they sound like they've been brightened up with EQ? Or do they sound smooth and warm with a little bit of an understated transient? Midrange content. Is there a smooth and solid midrange between about 250 hertz and two kilohertz or so? Low-frequency content. Is the sound solid and smooth, or weak and…
