Demonstration of polar patterns

- [Instructor] Choosing the polar pattern is one of the most important sound-shaping choices that a sound engineer makes because it fundamentally defines the spatial intimacy of the captured sound. Let's take a look at how polar patterns affect the way a microphone captures sound. I'll be using a single multi-pattern microphone and an acoustic guitar to demonstrate these polar patterns. This AKG 414 XLII includes omnidirectional, subcardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, and bidirectional patterns. And I have the on-mic pad and filter off. Omnidirectional mics pick up evenly all the way around the mic in a 360-degree sphere. They don't reject sounds from any direction. Anytime you want to capture a sound that includes the influence of the room, an omni mic is a good choice.
