- [Instructor] The final stage of an ADSR envelope, the R stands for release. This setting has everything to do with what happens when the note ends or your finger lets up from the key. Imagine you're trying to program a synth that sounds like a plucked string, like a harp or a classical guitar. (soft guitar music) Let's examine the characteristics of this type of sound. The attack is short. The onset is pretty instant, but the decay is fast as well. Once the pluck occurs, the initial volume reduces quickly, so the sustain is going to be low as well. This indicates a fast attack and low sustain. But as you heard, there's something else happening here after the attack, decay, and sustain components of the envelope end. There's another ringing out that occurs, even when a new note is plucked. We call this the release.
