It all starts with the sine wave

- [Illustrator] Audio synthesis can be used to create wild and complex sounds, from the richest synth beds, to screaming leads, to accurate emulations of real instruments. As it turns out, at the heart of all synthesis, and in fact, at the heart of all sound, is the most simple fundamental audio building block, the sine wave, which represents a single audio frequency. In this movie, I'll show you why this is, and how sine waves are used as the fundamental building blocks of synthesis. To fully understand how sine waves are at the heart of all sound, we have to look at a tiny bit of mathematics. And don't worry, we'll only discuss this math theoretically. The idea comes from a calculation called Fourier Transform. An equation which allows physicists to transform the way we visualize sound from what we call the Time domain into something we call the Frequency domain.
