Sculpting sound with envelopes

- [Instructor] In this movie, we'll explore how we can manipulate how our synth sounds develop over time, with envelopes. Envelopes are all about how a sound will develop over the course of time. The name envelope can actually be thought of as a package. In which our sound is wrapped from the initial onset of the sound and how that package opens up over the duration of the note. Just like we did with filters, we can graph out how our envelope looks. Here, instead of frequency, we have time across the X-axis. The four parameters of an envelope are referred to by the initials, A, D, S and R, and they stand for attack, decay, sustain, and release. Together, these control how a sound develops over time. Let's start with the attack value. How long does it take for a sound to get from nothing to full volume? A fast attack is somewhere on the order of zero to a very few milliseconds. And we'd use that for a percussive sound, like…
