Sidechaining the compressor with your kick - Logic Pro Tutorial
From the course: Logic Pro X: Making Beats
Sidechaining the compressor with your kick
Side chaining the Logic compressor with one of your kicks is a cool way to reinforce the pulse in a dance track. It's based on a simple concept, the level changes of the drums are applied as a control source to rhythmically trigger the compressor to affect the sound of other instruments like synths or pads. Here is the side chain being applied to a sync pad electro drift pad. And I was just, adjusting the compressor threshold to increase the intensity of that pulse. You can apply the effect on an entire mix, one keyboard track, which I'm doing here, or to sub groups of instruments. It can be too much on the whole mix, so it's often better to pick a group of instruments. I'll bypass the compressor and the pad, so you don't hear the effect at all. It's just a smooth pad, putting compressor back on. And making it more extreme. So let's rebuild all of this from scratch. We open up our project without the side chain, and we're just going to hear everything you heard before, but no pulsing…
