To make the case that not every graphic device is prehistoric, I offer up the mark for the Red Cross which only dates back to 1864 and the Geneva convention. Though there is occasional conjecture the flag came from a reverse version of the Swiss flag. No confirmation of that has ever surfaced. But what we do know, is that since the introduction of this protected symbol, designers have run slipshod with derivative design and really had their way with it. Despite strong legal language limiting the use of the red cross. Designers internationally have adopted their own variance of the symbol as a universal sign for hospitals and medicine. By all means avoid using red and the cross if you're client is associated with care. But a nod to it kept at a distance Is still a symbol the public has come to recognize for medical care.
