- As a designer of identity, we're often asked to take concepts and reduce them to their bare essence. We've been put in charge of editing for the consumer. We determine when we are providing enough information to convey a concept, but at the same time we have to make sure not to overload them. If I were to ask you to visually define land, that might throw you off, because so many variables can come into play. But if I asked you to describe terrain, it suddenly becomes much easier. I'm from Kansas, and if you asked many folks, they might describe our state as flat. We certainly have our share of that in the plains, but maybe it's because of that that subtle nuances are so evident to me. There are parts of my state so flat that you can actually see the horizon in all directions. A bit like flying, and recognizing the subtle curvature.
