Moon: The tired night sky

- If the sun rules the day, then surely the moon is king of the night. There are certainly other ways to depict what happens when the sun goes down, but the moon is an always ready solution. Often depicted with a bit of tongue-in-cheek, it usually seems like the moon is mid-nap or deep asleep whenever depicted with a face of its own. Though the face is assumed to be the man in the moon, in ancient times, the moon was generally considered a deity, or a female in nature. Other cultures saw a buffalo in the moon, or a rabbit. And then there's the folks that swore it was made of cheese. Our partner in sleep also is referred to as lunar, from the Greek word for moon, which is the root of the word loony or lunacy. It was once believed the phases affected our mental state and a full moon could send the susceptible over the edge. Associate the moon with dreaming, fantasy and mystery.
