Randomness: Avoiding perfection

- The thing about the human touch is that it's precious, unique, and never perfect. Were I to ask a thousand designers to create a circle on the computer and bisect it vertically down the middle, I would receive one thousand identical marks in return. There is only one true circle to a computer. And to cleave it in half is an equally precise process. Ask the group to hand draw the same. And our personal imperfections will infiltrate the process. No matching pair will exist. Different drawing devices, papers, various tools, and no tools to swing a perfect arch. Guesses and approximations of the middle. Some filled in and some just lines. That human interpretation and the human execution that comes from a hand, striving for perfection, but always doing just that: striving. Or from a mind of your own that knows just how overrated perfection really is. All of these marks express that quintessential imperfection that is the hallmark of a handmade aesthetic. This beautiful mark for Ozfest is unquestionably a circular O. And thank god the designer didn't knock out that perfect circle on his computer. Instead, an aboriginal art form influences the solution, riddled with imperfections. All of these marks embrace the idea of randomness and nonconformity of shape. Our charge, in this course, is to help you identify those opportunities that call for a logo and design that appeals to the consumer's desire to reconnect with humanity and to create solutions that exalt that very marketable character and authenticity.
