Depth of field preview

- As you change the aperture on your camera you are not only changing the amount of light that's coming into the lens, you are also changing the depth of field. If you're shooting wide open, so let's say at f2.8 or 3.5 then you're getting a very shallow depth of field and as you close the lens down, f16, f22, you're getting less light into the camera, but you're also getting a larger depth of field, more in focus at once. But exactly how much is in focus or isn't in focus? Well you could of course just take a picture and then look at it or you could use the depth of field preview. The depth of field preview will actually close the lens down to whatever setting you've chosen, but then compensate by brightening up the screen so that you can see what the image will look like, but the benefit of this is you will actually get to see the depth of field.
