- [Instructor] The defaults command is a command line utility used to read and write preferences for services and applications in Mac OS. Using defaults can be tricky though, so be careful as you follow along. One of the best features of defaults is that it may give you access to preference options that are not revealed in the preferences pane for the application you're trying to control. If that is the case, the application developer will be the best source of information on how to write defaults commands to control those types of behaviors. Preferences are located in the various domains of the system. It is important to know that preferences files are named in a sort of Reverse Domain Naming convention that is usually the same as the reverse of the developers domain name on the internet.
