- [Instructor] Some applications need to display alerts, like incoming messages or calendar reminders. So here I am working at my computer when this pops up. (alert dings) This is a notification for a calendar reminder, or I might see something like this, (alert pings) a notification for a new email message. So these are notifications. It's interesting to see that some applications behave differently. Some will alert you of new information, even if the application is not running, and some will not. I saw that notification from mail because the mail application is currently running. I see the little black dot underneath the icon on the dock. I just have the window minimized. But the messages application is not currently running. Still, if I get a new incoming message, (alert dings) I see that notification here. Notice how some of my notifications fade away, but this calendar alert stays on the screen. So there are…
