- When I consult organizations, there's often confusion abut the difference between setting big goals and making continual improvement. Goals do have a purpose. When someone creates a lofty vision of where they're going in the future, it's exciting. It creates some initial momentum to begin working on change. Yet motivation can die quickly without little achievements and rewards along the way. Big changes require many, small victories. To create these little victories, start by breaking general ideas into specific accomplishments. So for example, let's say you want to become a better leader. The vision that you see for yourself may cover lots of areas, like you're a great delegator, you're a better listener, and you keep getting promoted. Taken together, this big vision is motivational. But it isn't very actionable. So break this goal down into specific, singular changes. Improving delegation, improving listening,…
