- A commitment to personal improvement is a commitment to system improvement. What does that mean? To help you understand, let's return to the comparison between perfectionism and improvementism. In perfectionism I'm trying to get perfect outcomes. This is de-motivational because no one is perfect and we nearly always fall short in some way. On the other hand, improvementism recognizes that while we almost always will be imperfect, the systems can always be better. Systems or processes are the ways in which you do things. Systems are the steps you take to make a sale or the pattern you use to create your best work. Or the methods and equipment you use to exercise. You can always improve on how you do things. When it's time to make a change, essentially what we're doing is creating a new system and we're experimenting with it. When scientists experiment they don't expect a particular outcome.
