- Most of us have experienced getting diverted by an email or a text or someone trying to get our attention. But in conflict, we get diverted in a different way. I once had a client, I'll call her Maria, who would get stuck on things that sounded like a threatening statement. A team member that she was supervising would say, "You know, my ideas don't seem to be valued and if that continues, I can see myself checking out." Maria was diverted from coming to a resolution in the conflict with this team member because all she could hear was this person is threatening to check out rather than the content of what the person was saying.
