- Let me introduce you to your great, great, great, great, great grandfather. He was wandering around on the Open Plains of East Africa about 200,000 years ago. In his tribal group, were probably no more than 100 to 200 other people and most of them were relatives of some sort. It was a very mobile existence and everything had to be carried. This included clothing, weapons, water, food and small children who could not keep up with the walking pace of the group. Imagine if your ancestor came upon a sharp edged piece of rock. It fit perfectly in his hand and it could make a great tool or weapon, but carrying it was a difficult decision. On the one hand, there may have been plenty of similar rocks in the area and he would needlessly expend precious energy by carrying it around. On the other hand, he could be moving into an environment where such rocks would no longer be available and he would have missed an opportunity…
