Take the first and second actions
- One obstacle to making change last is a lack of specific action steps. We may get excited when we learn a new general concept, yet it can often be difficult to determine what to do next. In all your learning, cultivate the habit of looking and listening for one specific change at a time. Your focus on individual actions will increase the likelihood of your continual follow-through. Let's say you watched my course on leading productive meetings, and you came away with a list of many different things you could change. Creating that list, either in writing or in your mind, is natural. At the end of the training, go through your list and choose just one thing you want to do better. For example, maybe you want to start and end meetings on time. After you choose that one change, figure out the first and second actions you must take to make progress. Take a minute or two to decide what they are, and write them down.…
