The power of free versus charging money

- Let's say you're a highly paid expert who charges a $1,000 per hour for your specialized and valuable work. A close friend comes to you and asks for help in your area of expertise. Now imagine two different scenarios. In the first, they tell you the following. "I know you're a highly skilled expert, but can you cut back your fee to a $100 per hour to help me out?" In the second scenario, they tell you the following, "I know that you have massive experience in this area and I could really use your help. Would you be willing to spend a little time and give me some quick input?" I can reliably predict how you'd react in both of these situations. In the first, you'd resent your friend for asking you to lower your hourly rate. You'd think that they're cheap and they're trying to take advantage of your relationship with them.
