Recording, importing, editing, and slicing the sample

- When you're working with samples in beat making, one of the most common and classic ways of using a sample is taking a larger piece of music and chopping it up into smaller pieces, then recreating the sample in a different way to come up with your own ideas and melodies. So, I'll start by choosing a sample. Now, in Maschine, you can actually go in and record your samples. You want to go to the Sampling tab and go to the Record page, but I'm just going to import something today. If you want to learn more about actually sampling and how to sample that works, make sure you check out my course Up and Running with Maschine 2. So I have some files over here. I want to go in, let's see, and right now I'm just going through my samples just to see if there's something that I want to mess with. (hip hop music) (dramatic music) (mellow music) (intense music) (piano music) A lot of times, when I'm looking for a sample, I like to look for stuff without the drums and the music, so I can have more melodies to work with. So... (high-pitched music) (mysterious music) (dramatic music) So I kind of like how that one sounds, and now I'll just go through my process of digging through the sample, editing it up and kind of chopping it. So, let's take a look at that. First, before I start chopping it up, I like to go in and set my polyphony to one so that the pad will cut itself off. (intense music) And also go in and put it in a choke group. (intense music) Now I'll go into the Editor. Kind of look for a place where I want to start, so... (intense music) And one thing I find is everybody chops samples up differently. It just depends on your ear and what it is that you're looking for. Some people look for more percussive points. Others just look for cleaner, melodic points. So I'm just going through, seeing what captured my ear. (intense music) And you can also go in and unchop it manually, but you can go in a slice mode if you wanted to and have it automatically slice it up for you. But I like to go in and find my chops myself, so... (intense music tuning) So again, you can see, I'm just auditioning sounds and see how things fit together, and that's how I kind of find the chops that I want, so... (intense music) And kind of hear different things that I want to come after different chops, so... (intense music) So I think I kinda got something that I want to work with, and from here, I can go in to start coming up with different patterns and ideas. Maybe I might find something as I'm working to kind of chop out and it makes some more. But next we'll take a look at making a pattern from these chops.
