- When we work in 3D, the concept of zero is completely relative. Most 3D software will have an origin to the 3D world. This origin has the coordinates of 0, 0, and 0. We can measure any object's position relative to this origin, but the origin is really just an arbitrary point in space that was defined by the software. Many times, this predefined coordinate system does not serve our needs, so we can create another. Let's go back to our virtual city. Preston is on the 5th floor of a building at 3rd and 4th. He wants to travel to work on the 1st floor of a building at 2nd and 5th, and wants to know how to get there. If we just use the world coordinates, then telling him how to get there requires a bit of math. Now, that's too complicated. A simpler way is to use Preston as our center, and tell him to go five floors down, one block over, and one block up. This simplified method uses what is called a local coordinate…
