Preparing for the 3D Paint tool

- [Instructor] Maya's 3D paint tool allows you to paint directly onto the surface of objects. And it's actually one of the oldest parts of Maya, it's directly descended from the artisan tool in wave front, and that dates all the way back to the mid 1980s. And because of that antique nature of the code base, you will find that you won't be able to get the level of performance or the features that you might see in a dedicated program, such as Mud Box, or Zbrush, or even Photoshop, but for quick and dirty changes to a shading network the Maya 3D paint tool can come in very handy. For example, I've got a noise pattern on my parquet flooring here, but it would be better if I could paint the wear pattern to represent where people have walked in the gallery, so I can do that with the 3D paint tool.
