Rendering a depth pass in Maya software
Compositing allows us to put the final polish on an image or animation easily, in a place where the artistic flexibility doesn't come at a giant hit in time. Fine tuning something in Maya can take hours. Fine tuning colors in Nuke or After Effects for example, can take minutes, if that long. I've got all my passes rendered out, master, beauty, speck, occlusion, all the different pieces. And I realize I forgot my depth pass. I'm going to put on depth of field and post, and so I'm going to render it out separately here in Maya. Now, if you remember it in time, you can go into your render settings, and into the passes and this is where we'll add in our scene passes such as depth, camera depth or camera depth remap which records a z-depth from the camera, and that way we can use it to drive depth of field.
