Work with the Light Editor

- [Instructor] Another window that you need to be aware of when working with render settings is Maya's light editor. Now you may be familiar with this. If not, it's a very handy window to use. So we can get to it under windows, rendering editor, there's the light editor. It's also right here in the interface. It looks like a little light bulb with a settings button. And when I bring this up, you'll see that it has a list of all the lights in the scene. So this window has a list of all the lights in the scene. You can also create lights here if you want. But another nice thing is that it actually has all the different layers. So you can actually swap through your layers here. So if I wanted to, I could go to my default scene layer. I could go to that matte layer we were looking at. I could also go to the lighting layer. Now, each one of these layers can also change the lighting. Now by default, when you go into the light editor, you'll just see the lights in the scene. And if you click on any one of these lights, you can change whatever attributes you want about the lights. So if I wanted to, I could increase the intensity of this sun spot, or I could turn it on or off. Now when you are in a specific layer, such as this layer lighting, you'll notice that some things may change. So if the layer has a value that's highlighted in orange, that means that that layer is overridden for that layer. In other words, that means it's changed specifically for that layer. Now we'll get into this a little bit later, but just understand that. So the light editor is a great way just to manage the lights in your normal scenes, but also as you go into render settings, it's also a wonderful way to affect lights on a layer by layer basis.
