Create a bin view

- [Instructor] Media Composer gives you another level of control over the way your clips are displayed in bins. To illustrate this, I'm going to take our scene 7 bin. Just pull out from being docked with the scene 6 bin here in the bin container. And I'm going to resize this a little so we can see more of the contents of the bin. A menu that I skipped over a little at the top of the bin up here allows us to choose presets that change the way the bin displays its contents. For example, I can set this to basic and I get just the name, the start and time code duration and so on. If I switch this to statistics, we get a lot more information about our clips. These presets actually exist in the Settings list in the User category. They're all here available for you to access. If I double-click on one of these, you see I get a list of columns that I want to be displayed or not displayed in a particular view. So for example if I go into the statistics bin view, and maybe I'll add the format heading and click OK, close this window and now I'll switch out and switch back and we have our format heading. You don't need to go into the settings list to apply this change though. If you want you can right-click on any of these headings and choose Choose Columns. Here now for example, maybe I'll choose the frames per second. I'll just select that and click OK and if you work this way the heading is added automatically. I just resize a little. You can see now we've got FPS. You can even add custom columns. So we've got a character in these scenes with a blue shirt. I'll right-click and choose Add Custom Column and let's say, blue shirts, press Enter and now we have a new heading. And we can just put a number if we like. I'm just putting these randomly of course, how many blue shirts we'd expect to see in an individual shot but now that I have some numbers, I can double-click on this heading to sort the bin in that order. A really useful to work with custom columns is to assign something like a quality or just how much you like the shot to a column. You could do that with asterisk symbols if you like and then it becomes a visual reference to indicate how much you like to take. In fact, as the director on set, I'll commonly give a five-star review at the end of each take which can be put into the camera logs and then add it by the system editor when you get it to post. And it means you could just focus on the four and five-star takes right away. If you think the view that you have is perfect and one that you will want to re-visit, of course, you can click on this menu and choose Save as. Maybe I'll call this Blue Shirt, since I've given that heading. Now click OK and we've got a Blue Shirt view on the list. You can also remove headings. You can do that by hiding a column in this menu, if I right-click and choose Choose Columns and scroll right the way down, you could see this custom column that's been added to the list. I'll just click OK, let's back. Or you can select a heading and press Delete and Media Composer will warn you that all the data in the selected column or if it's multiple columns will be lost. I'm throwing away this metadata and I'll click OK. One more useful detail here of course is you're not limited to text information. If I right-click and select Choose Columns, I can for example choose to display the frame. And now I have this size control to specify the size of those frames. And if I go back to the settings, I'm going to File and choosing Settings and I look for this blue shirt view in the User category. I can right-click and choose restore to default. This is pretty useful if you've modified one of the built-in views. I can duplicate the setting as I can with any setting on this list or of course I can choose Delete. And now if I go back to my bin, that blue shirt option is no longer listed.
