Create a bin view

- [Narrator] Media Composer gives you another level of control over the way your clips are displayed in bins. To illustrate this, am going to take our scene seven bin, just pull it out from being docked with scene six bin here in the bin container. Am going to resize this a little so we can see more of the contents of the bin . A menu that I skipped over a little at the top of the bin up here, allow us to choose presets that change the way the bin displays its contents. For example, I can set this to basic and I get just the name, the starting and time code duration and so on. If I switch this to statistics, we get a lot more information about our clips. These presets actually exist in the settings list, in the user category, there're all here available for you to access. If I double click on one of these, you see I got a list of columns that I want to be displayed or not be displayed in a particular view. So for example if I go into the statistics bin view and maybe I'll add the format, heading and click okay. Close this window. And now I'll switch out and switch back. And we have our format heading. You don't need to go into the settings list to apply this change though. If you want you can right click on any of these headings and choose columns. Here now, for example maybe I'll choose the frames per second. I'll just select that and click okay. And if you work this way, the heading is added automatically. I'll just resize a little you can see now we got fps. You can even add custom columns, so we got a characters in this scenes with the blue shirt. or right click and choose add custom column and lets say blue shirts, press Enter and now we have a new heading. and we can just put a number if we like. Am just putting these randomly of course to the how many blue shirts we would expect to see in an individual shirt. But now that I have some numbers, I can double click on this heading to sort the bin in that order. Really? useful way to work with custom columns is to assign something like a quality or just how much you like the shirt to a column. You can do that with # tricks symbols if you like, and then it becomes a visual reference to indicate how much you like the take. In fact as a director on set I'll commonly give a five star review at the end of each take which can be put into the camera logs and then added by the system editor when he get into post, and it means you can just focus on the four and five star takes right away. If you think the view that you have is and perfect and the one that you want to revisit, of course you click on these menu and choose save as, maybe I'll call this blue shirt since I have given that heading, I'll click okay. And now we got a blue shirt view on the list. You can also remove headings. You can do that by hiding a column in this menu if I right click and choose columns, and scroll right the way down you can see this custom column has been added to the list. I'll just click okay, its back. Or you can select a heading and press delete and Media Composer will warn you that all the data in the selected column or reference multiple columns will be lost, and throwing away this metadata. Now, click okay. One more useful detail here of course is your not limited to text information. If I right click and select choose columns I can for example choose to display the frame, and now I have this size control to specify the size of those frames. If I go back to the settings, am going to file and choosing settings. And I look for these blue shirt view in the user category, I can right click and choose restore to default, this is pretty useful if you've modified one of the built-in views. I can duplicate the setting as I can with any setting on this list or of course I can choose delete. And now if I go back to my bin that blue shirt option is no longer listed.
