Lasso to select

- [Instructor] So far, we have been selecting clip segments by having a segment mode enabled, whether it's the smart tool mode or the red or yellow modes and clicking on clip segments in our sequence. And we've learned about link selection and we've learned about overriding the link selection with the alt or option key. But there is another way, I'll just deselect here. If you lasso from top left to bottom right If you lasso from top left to bottom right within your sequence and completely encapsulate one or more segments, you'll select them. So I'm going to lasso from left to right around this 6_39_2 clip, around this 6_39_2 clip, and you can see it is selected. It'll be selected using the current segment mode, and of course, I can switch mode by holding alt or option and clicking or by right clicking on this button. If you lasso from left to right over multiple clip segments, you'll select multiple segments. And I want to draw your attention here to the fact that I'm halfway through this 7_36_5 clip, I haven't encapsulated the entire clip in my lasso. So now, if I release the mouse, I don't get that clip. You'll only select clip segments that you've completely included inside the lasso. inside the lasso. And there's a great modifier key that will change the way this works, too. If you hold down the alt or option key, you can lasso from anywhere in your sequence. The clip selection will be ignored. So here, I'm holding down alt or option and I'm lassoing right from the middle of this 6_39_2 clip. And you'll notice that the clip is being ignored. I'm just targeting this bit of filler on my audio one track. And there, releasing the mouse, I've selected just that. This is most of the time the way that you're going to select more than one clip segment in the sequence. You'll probably find it most intuitive to select one segment at a time just by clicking on it. But, if you want to select multiple segments, let's say this whole group here, it's pretty quick to just hold alt or option, lasso over them, and release. It's intuitive and now you know you've got everything within that range. We're going to get into trimming later on, but this is a good moment to highlight the importance of not lassoing right to left. If I lasso right to left, either from the blank space in the background of the timeline window, or by holding the alt or option key so I can lasso from anywhere. Now, I'm getting these pink trim handles and they allow me to perform a special type of trim, called a slip trim. We're going to get to trimming soon, but for now, I'm going to deselect by pressing the escape key and just reiterate, it's left to right, top to bottom, and you'll lasso clips in your sequence. You can lasso from the bottom as well, as I am here. It has the same effect. The key difference is always travel from left to right when selecting segments.
