What you should know before you begin

- [Instructor] This course is for media professionals that would like to know how Avid Media Composer works, and there are a few things that you ought to know before you get started with this course. First of all, you should have a basic familiarity with your operating system. It doesn't really matter if you're working on macOS or on Windows, the functionality is essentially the same in Media Composer, but you do need to know how to do things like copy and paste and move items from one folder location to another. You should also have a basic grasp of video, and this doesn't mean you need to be an expert or an engineer, but you should know things like what pixels are, and you should know about things like timecode and video formats. For example, are you recording HD or UHD, very high resolution video? If you're not familiar with these terms at all, then some of the contents of this course is going to be a little difficult to follow. That's not to say that you won't get benefit from it, and of course, you'll definitely learn how to edit video with Avid Media Composer. But again, I'd encourage you to get a grasp of these fundamental concepts before you dive into working with any nonlinear editing system. If you'd like to check out another course on LinkedIn Learning that explores these topics in nice, brief little packets of video, then I'd encourage you to check out my Digital Media Foundations course here on LinkedIn Learning, which breaks down every one of these kinds of topics into bite-size pieces.
