- Here on the Home tab, we have a set of styles over here on the right, but much of formatting that many Word users do focuses instead here in the font and the paragraphs group. For example, if this is a heading and I wanted to format this, I might decide I'd like my headings to be larger, a 14-point and bold and perhaps even change the color or to this blue. And then if I wanted to do that again, I could either make the same set of choices here, or as a shortcut, I could use the format painter. However, this method of formatting using the tools that are in the font and paragraph dialog boxes or in the font and paragraph groups, is really sort of like putting lipstick on the pig. Because even though I formatted this and said this is what I want my headings to look like, this isn't a heading, this is just normal text that I've applied some formatting to.
