Pages and books

and links as resources. But what if we want to customize the content even more and tie several resources together? The answer is with pages and books. Pages are probably the most powerful resource that you have available on Moodle. They allow you to add text, links, images, audio, and video, and even embed HTML code Let's take a look at how to build a page. First, I'm going to make sure that my editing is turned on, which it is, and then I'll scroll down to one of my units, and in this case, it's the Nutrition unit. Off to the right, I'll click Add an activity or resource, and from the popup, I want to scroll down to Page. Once I've selected that, at the bottom, I'll click Add, and here's where we can begin customizing this page. Now, my goal is to create a resource that contains text as well as some embedded videos as well as a URL to a Google Form that students can fill out. So the first thing I'll do is to title this and I'll title it Introduction to Nutrition. Below this, we have the Content box, and in here is where we create the actual page. Here's where we can add things like text, links, the images, audio and video, and more. So the first thing I'm going to do is to paste some text in here that I've already typed out. I'll go ahead and do that. And as you can see here, it says In this unit, we'll be discussing nutrition. Before we begin talking about the different foods we eat, please watch the following video. So I want to make sure my cursor is inside this box, where I want that video to be, and then I'm going to go up to the icon up here, not the image one, but next to that, with a camera inside of a page is the icon for insertin' or editin' an audio/video file. I'll click on that and it asks us to share our link, our video, or our audio. Now, I want to add a video, and in a new tab, I actually have this video from YouTube. It is The Digestive System video from Bozeman Science. I'll go ahead and copy that URL, and back here, inside of Moodle, I'm going to paste in the video source URL. I'll paste that in. Now, we could browse our computer if we want, if you have a video that you created. In this case though, I have one that has a URL. Below this, we can decide on Display options, if you want, Advanced settings as well as Subtitles and captions, which I do recommend takin' a look at and includin'. Right now, I'm going to click Insert media, and just like that, this video has now been inserted. So right now, you can't see much, but you can see that the video has been inserted here. Now, after this, the text says After watching this video, please answer the following questions, which students know they should do in their journal. Below that, it says Next, you will watch another video. It's going to be a TED Talk, but it says before watchin' this video, please fill out the following Google Form titled Do you Eat Healthy Foods? So, this right here, I want to change up a little bit, and I'm going to highlight this because I want to make this a link. Now, in another tab, I actually have that Google Form. So what I'm going to do is to copy that Google Form and then I want to put that URL as a link to this text. So, again, I want to make sure that that text is highlighted, then up at the top, I'll click on the Link button, I'll paste in that URL, then I have to decide if I want this to open in a new window. Now, I always click on this because I like the fact that it then opens up a new window to show whatever it is that you're linking to, and it doesn't take the students away from that Moodle platform. So I am going to have that opened in a new window and then click Create link. As you can see now, if I scroll down, Do you Eat Healthy Foods? is now a link, and when the students click on it, it will bring them to that Google Form. It's telling them all responses are anonymous. Next watch the following TED Talk. So here's where I want another video. I'll make sure that cursor is where I want it. From YouTube, I have this TED Talk that I want to include. I'll go ahead and click on the Add in the audio/video file, click on Video, paste in that URL, and then insert that media. to share for tomorrow's discussion during class. So here I am done with that page. Next we have to decide on the Appearance. Do you want to display the page name? Display the page description? We have common module settings, Tags, and Competencies, if you want to attach those. I'm going to click Save and display, and let's take a look at what our page looks like. So this is that page. Here I have Introduction to Nutrition. I have that text. The video is embedded right inside of here. You can see that I have the Do you Eat Healthy Foods? link that if clicked on will bring me to that Google Form. Below this, I have the TED Talk that is embedded right inside of here, and then it tells students to write down some things and be ready to share that tomorrow. So that is a page and it's a valuable resource that you can create on the Moodle platform. Now, what if you want to include a large amount of text with media files embedded? Pages will become too crowded and difficult to load, so in this case, you can create a book. Essentially, a book is a collection of different pages that you create and organized into chapters and sub-chapters for students to navigate. They're obviously more time-consuming to create, but can act as a great resource once created. So let's take a look at how we would create a book. I'm going to navigate back to my Course here and let's go to the Nutrition section again and I'm going to click on Add an activity or resource. This time from Resources, I'll select the Book. I'll click on Add and this is where we begin creatin' the book. Again, a book is a collection of pages. So here I could name it, in this case, I'll just name it Sample Book, I'm just going to put some information in here to show you how this is added. Next we can decide on Appearance, module settings, and more. I'm going to click on Save and display, and when I do that, we need to modify it even more because we haven't yet added any pages to this book. So the first page is going to be a title, and here I could enter in, let's say, Introduction, as the first section. You can click here, Only available once the first chapter has been created, this is for sub-chapters. Next we have the Content, so I'm going to add in here some sample content, but this is where I would enter in the information to create a page much like the Introduction to Nutrition page that we just created. Below, we can add tags and then I can click Save changes. Now notice when I do this, on the right-hand side, I have my Table of contents for this book. I have the Introduction. And if I want, I can click on the gear icon and make edits to it. I'm going to back up. I want to click on the plus icon over on the right in order to add a new page or add a new chapter. I'll go ahead and click on that. Let's say this one, I've set up as Digestive System. I could set this as a sub-chapter if I wanted, but in this case, I don't. Sample information, and, again, I'm just entering in some random information here just to show what the structure of a book looks like. At the bottom, I'll click Save changes. And now, on the right, I have my two chapters, the Introduction as well as the Digestive System, and both of these would be pages that I've built out. Now, in order to show you an example, I want to click over here, on a different course that I have in Moodle, it's a different Biology course, and this is a book that I have inside of here. So as you can see, the Introduction to Nutrition is the first page. It has that right here. This is the one we just built. And then after that, you can navigate to Digestive System, Understanding Food, Metabolism, and Optimizing Your Nutrition. So next, let's go take a look at my original course here that we were creatin', and I want to navigate back to my Biology 101 course page. And if we scroll down now, you'll see here that under Nutrition, I do have that Introduction to Nutrition page as well as that Sample Book. Hopefully, this video helped you to better understand Hopefully, this video helped you to better understand pages and books, and how you can use them. pages and books, and how you can use them.
