- [Narrator] This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to create and publish a web page from scratch and has been specifically crafted for educators of all kinds, including K12 teachers, higher ed faculty and students, business and corporate trainers and instructional designers. Throughout this course we will write all the HTML used to create the website for the fictitious course of ENV432 Impacts. My goal for this course is to empower you with the knowledge and skills to understand enough about HTML to make any content that you publish on the internet look and function the way that you want it to. If you want to learn to build your own site from scratch, then follow along with each and every movie and I'll help you develop that skill. To be successful in this course, you should be comfortable using either Windows, Mac or Linux to navigate files and browse the web. You do not need any prior coding experience. We'll build those skills together throughout this course. This course has been designed to build from one concept and skill to the next. Therefore, I'd suggest watching the entire course through in order the first time, then go back and revisit specific movies and chapters as you build your own site. There are a few movies in the course that focus on writing HTML and CSS inside of a learning management system. Educators who teach with an LMS face a uniquely difficult challenge of building and managing sites that the fundamental code is outside of your control. In those LMS movies we'll take on that challenge head on. And the techniques that you learn will be applicable to adding HTML and CSS to any closed system outside of your direct control. Chapter seven, setting up web infrastructure, has been designed to be watched either last or first. In that chapter we will set up a typical web hosting account on stateu.org, a site that I work with the educational web hosting team at reclaimhosting to set up. StateU is modeled on the Domain of Ones Wwn project that was started at the University of Mary Washington and has since been adopted by faculty and students at colleges and universities around the world. The infrastructure is nearly identical to that of other public web hosting companies. So everything that you learn on that infrastructure will directly translate to many sites within the education, business and public hosting services.
