Creating templates for Final Cut Pro - Motion Tutorial

- [Instructor] Now you may have noticed I don't have a specific exercise file for this exercise. And that's because we're just going to be jumping right to the point of how to create Motion templates, actually, Final Cut templates, from Motion for use in Final Cut. And, there are already a bunch of features built-in to Motion to enable you to do this. So, if you don't have Motion open, open Motion, and then go up under "File" and say, "New From Project Browser," until you see a window like this. To make sure it looks like this, you want to go to the "Blank" section, and in here, notice I have several different options of types of things I could create. Most of the time we've just been creating Motion Projects. But you can design custom Effects for use in Final Cut. You can design custom Generators for use in Final Cut. Transitions, but, the most common thing people need to do is create a Title. So that's what we're going to do. I'll enable Final Cut Title. And then I'll go over to my Presets here, and you want to just choose whatever Preset you would use for your specific medium. So if you edit at 25 frames a second, or 1920 by 1080, or 4K, or whatever, just choose what you like. I'm choosing "Broadcast HD 720" at "29.97." The duration's going to be kind of fast, five seconds, cause it's just going to be a rough lower third. So when I click "Open," it'll go ahead and open this amazing new Final Cut project. But, I don't necessarily need to make the background editable. All I want is just editable type. So here, I'm going to click on this "Title Background," and I'll just press Delete. So, all I have is type here, and I can't see the type just yet. So, what I want to do is zoom out. So here, if I go to my magnification, I'm going to choose "Fit." Now I can see everything that's in here. And I want to create a graphic element that would go underneath of this type. So, I could go to my "Shapes" here and just choose a specific shape. Or, I could go to my Shape Tools. So, I'll just go to my Shape Tools, and grab my Rectangle Tool. With my Rectangle Tool selected, I'll press "F7" to open up the HUD, and in here, I'll click "Fill" in the color area here, and I'll just choose a slightly different color. Let's choose kind of this teal blue color, okay? Now, I can click and drag starting from the left side, and go all the way over to the right, like so. And then we'll just move our type directly on top of our rectangle. In order to make the type a little more legible, I'm going to go to the "Inspector" section for the text, close my HUD, and under the "Appearance," I will scroll down and we'll just add a "Drop Shadow." And then we'll go back up to the color, and instead of it being bright white, I'll click on the color and I'll just bring it down just a little bit so it's a little more grey. Okay, now it's not really fancy, but that's not the point of this. This is just to kind of show you how we can save this for Final Cut. So, let's click on our "Text" layer, and in the Inspector, under the "Format" section for the text, if you scroll down, there's an option for "Editable in FCP." You want to make sure that that is selected. So once that's selected, I can go up under the "File" menu and just choose, "Save." And since I started with wanting to create a Final Cut Title template, it's automatically opened this template menu. So, let's name this. I'll call this, "3rd." Very complex name, I'll tell ya. Then in the "Category," I'll click on the pull-down and I'll create a "New Category." So for the new category, I'll just call this, "Custom." And I'll click "Create." And then under the "Theme," I could add a sub-theme underneath if I wanted to. But, I don't need to worry about that. I don't want to worry about anything else except, publish. So I'll click "Publish." Then, notice the icon up here looks different. This is the icon for a Final Cut template. So I'm going to jump into Final Cut Pro. You don't have to if you don't want to. I just want to show you how it pops up within Final Cut. So if you notice, in my Final Cut sequence I just have this video clip, and that's it. But if we navigate to the left side of the interface, and make sure that we're actually looking at our Titles here, you'll see I have a bunch of different Titles. So, if I click through, I could browse through a bunch of different templates that have already been built for Final Cut. Or, I could jump right to my "Custom" section, and here's my third element. So I can just drag that and drop it right above my video layer, and there it is. So now if I want to actually edit this, I can come over to this window here, and you notice I have the ability to adjust all kinds of things in terms of "Blend Mode," and Transform Tools. If I click over on this button, it'll give me my Text Inspector. So in here, I could change the style of the text. Or, I could edit the type. So, I could say like, "Sarah Connor." Right? Okay, I have a horrible, horrible Arnold accent. So I'll just stop right there. So, as you can see, once you've actually saved something out of Motion as a template for Final Cut Pro, inside of Final cut, it's ready to rock. Just make sure when you're inside of Motion, that you don't start with just a generic Motion project. Go ahead and utilize the feature inside of the browser. So go up into "File," and create "New From Browser," and that's where you'll find your Final Cut templates.
