- [Instructor] If you ask any computer networking professional if they use open-source software, they will look at you as if you were an alien. There are so many they're using daily. To name a few, these range from operating systems, or OSs like Linux, to popular stand-alone applications such as packets sniffers. I'm sure that many of you are already familiar with Wireshark, a popular packet sniffing program. Most of the networking software comes pre-packaged together with an OS. On Microsoft Windows, ipconfig is such a program. We'll be using it often to check the properties of a network interface card, you see here. The most basic information ipconfig provides is the internet protocol, or IP address, that uniquely identifies a network device. The equivalent open-source utility to ipconfig on Linux is ifconfig.
