- [Voiceover] Hi, this is Martin Guidry and welcome back to another edition of Building Your Technology Skills. This week we're going to talk about Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is a group of technologies that allow us to build wireless local networks. Wi-Fi does not refer to a specific technology or standard, it is not an acronym or an abbreviation, it doesn't stand for anything, it's just Wi-Fi. It's usually spelled with a capital W, a capital F, and a dash in between. Sometimes the dash is eliminated or sometimes the capitalization is different, but the preferred way to go is with a capital W, a capital F, and a dash between the words Wi and Fi. Wi-Fi is closely related to a set of standards that are numbered as 802.11. These are standards from the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. They are specifications for implementing wireless local networks. And usually when we talk about one it is followed by a letter. So 802.11 is broken down into several sub-sections. For example,…
