Ice caves

- One aspect of the Icelandic landscape that is only accessible in the winter months are glacial ice caves. These caves are created by melt water that runs underneath the glacier and they are truly amazing places to visit and explore. Since December and January are the darkest months, November as well as mid-February and March are best, just because there's more daylight that will be availabe to filter down into the cave, and that means more hours in the day to arrange a tour. Access to an ice cave is typically by driving across a glacial moraine, the barren and rocky area that is exposed as a glacier retreats. The route to a glacial cave often involves crossing the stream or river that flows from underneath the glacier. You can see the edge of the glacier there in the background. Once you arrive at the cave, the entrance may be in the form of an opening created by the river. In some ice caves, access may be achieved by rappelling down from circular holes in the roof of the cave. This…
