Troubleshoot: Excel startup

- [Instructor] In this lesson, we're going to explore some of the common troubleshooting techniques that you can use if you're experiencing Excel startup issues. And this could be problems with Excel actually starting or maybe just specific workbooks. The basic troubleshooting steps include first and as always, ensure that Office and Windows are up-to-date. Next, determine if there is a conflict with another program or a process. If Excel stops responding, there could be issues with the file itself, such as hidden objects in the file, excessive styles, invalid names, or incorrect formulas or arrays. We'll be covering troubleshooting techniques to address some of these issues in more detail in an upcoming lesson. In the meantime, let's pop over to our desktop and take a look at some of the other troubleshooting techniques that you can apply. Our first troubleshooting technique when we're at the desktop is to run Excel in safe mode. To do this from your desktop, click the Windows key and start typing run. And then select run from apps. In the dialog box, enter "excel /safe." This will start Excel in safe mode. And you can tell you're in safe mode because it states that off to the top. Once you're in safe mode, you can disable the add-ins. To do so, select file, options, and then add-ins. And the reason you want you to remove your add-ins is sometimes an add-in can cause unexpected results. In my example, I have two application add-ins that are active. To disable them, down at the bottom, select go from manage Excel add-ins. Uncheck the add-ins that are active, and click OK. And that's it, that's all you have to do. At this point, you would close Excel and then restart and see if that corrected your problem. If the problem has been corrected, you can start adding in the add-ins one at a time. If the issue persists, you can repair Excel. I'm going to do this through add remove programs. As before, I'm going to select the Windows key, and this time I'm going to search for programs. And select add or remove programs from system settings. Select your version of Office. I know this is counterintuitive, but select modify. The first thing you'll want to do is to run through a quick repair. Using this option should fix most of your issues right off the top. But if that doesn't work, then move into the online repair. And that will take some time. Those are your basic troubleshooting techniques to handle Excel if you're having issues with Excel starting. For additional tips and tricks, see the Excel Help Center.
