- [Instructor] The subject of this chapter is California's plentiful vineyards. We'll use a photo of grapes on the vine as a reference and illustrate them using the scratchboard tool. Now, do not confuse this with tracing. Tracing generally infers line work that precisely adheres to the underlying source. Not so here. We want to allow the hand the freedom to improvise. And so let's begin. So here's our photo, and I'm going to go ahead and create a layer above it that we'll be working on. I've got my scratchboard tool. I'm going to be painting in black, so I've got that going. And I'm going to just test this a little bit on my layer so I can always undo what I'm doing here. You'll remember we previously dealt with the notion of being able to smooth these strokes out. So I'm going to go into smoothing. And I'm going to turn dampening up. And I'm going to turn it up to maybe 92, 93. Each one of us is going to have a different feel for what works right, but I know from experience this…
