Embellishing the artwork

- [Instructor] We could call this finished but I like to embellish artwork like this with some hand applied strokes that add energy and visual interest. In this case, we'll use the scratchboard tool to stroke a few quick swashes around the monarchs to echo its shape. We'll also add an enhancing glow around our hero monarch as well as some smaller distant monarchs. Let's embellish away. So for each one of these of course I'm going to want to create a separate layer. So let's do the background monarchs first. And we'll just call these small monarchs. And we're going to return to our monarch brush. So if we jump back into the stamp brushes we can get this monarch and I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to make it much smaller in this case. So let's make it more like around maximum size, something like this. And I want to go ahead and, I'm just going to use the actual orange monarch color, maybe make it a little less saturated than the other ones that we've done. And, let's just tie a test in here and see what we got. See how they're so close together? I don't want that. So I'm going to undo this and if we go back to our brush icon up here in the property bar we can create some stroke jitter on here. And I'm just going to crank it all the way up. And the other thing I'm going to do is I'm going to open color variability here. We can shut this. And I'm going to just put a little bit of variability into this brush strokes. I might crank it up a little bit, I can always adjust it later. So let's try that. Yeah that is a bit much isn't it, so, let's turn the saturation down. That's still quite a bit. There we go. So I'm just having a bunch of these in the background flying around. And in fact, what I could do here to just kind of de accentuate them at little bit is I'm going to adjust the opacity of this. There we go, see, and I can kind of control how much I want that to jazz up that background. If it's at full it seems like it's almost distracting so I'm turning it down a bit. Next, let's go ahead and we're going to get the scratchboard tool. Let's see we want to reduce some of this so we can see all of our layers if possible. I want to create a new layer and I'm going to put it so that it's up here and let's just call this strokes. And now we'll go get the scratchboard tool, which is on our pens selection. Right here. We'll go to scratchboard tool. I want white. And I'm just going to try to sample on here to see, that's good, looks like I have some smoothing on here so I'm going to crank this down. And I might make this brush just a little bigger. So I'm just going around these. And this just adds kind of energy on these, ya know? I might even make this a little smaller here. Something like that. So I'm not trying to trace around them or anything. I'm just mirroring their shapes and if anything it kind of adds energy as if uh, butterfly wings are actually moving. And I also want to put in this little antenna. And I can see that I want to even take my brush down a little smaller for this. So we'll just. Now here's one little thing I'm going to quickly say this because now that I've done this I realize I really would have liked the antenna to be black. How do I fix that? I'm going block transparency. Switch to blank. I can make my brush a little larger now. See now I can paint in these. So if I want to just kind of fix the way I actually intended, instead of being so fast and not thinking about what I'm doing here. This just gives me a quick way to correct this. And by the way, you can see look, if I decided I wanted to change the color of the lines after I've drawn them, around all of these, this is another way to do it. Now let's turn that off. Let's turn this back down, small. And I'm just going to put hair on here. So, we could have called this a day prior to embellishing. But little extras like this add life and energy to a piece. And because we're working in a layer wise fashion, we are free to either include such embellishments or not. The choice is yours.
