Introduction to sketching as creative self-expression

Painting what's in your mind's eye is my term for transferring a mental visualization into a physical form that can be shared with others. In other words, creating something from nothing. One of the simplest forms of this is sketching. When we sketch ideas onto paper, we're participating in an activity that is purely human, creative self-expression. Before photographing the still life we are using in this course, I had a fairly specific visualization of what I wanted. The first thing I did was sketch out some ideas. While we now have this image transferred from my thoughts to a photograph, many paintings never pass through the photography stage. They are simply a refined version of the original sketch. This is yet another methodology that can be applied to digital painting. And it is what we will be doing in this chapter, painting what's in your mind's eye.
