Layers as a compositional tool

When painting traditionally, every brush stroke must be considered. Once laid down, removing a stroke is almost impossible without some visible remnant of the original stroke. This is a key hallmark of traditional painting. The finished painting is a record of the painter's commitment. Painting digitally, the situation is different. We have several safety nets enabling us to work in an environment, in which experimentation is encouraged. Tools, like multiple undo, layers, and non-destructive effects, provide the digital painter with an extremely malleable medium. Layers provide a great compositional adjustment tool that should be taken advantage of. So here's the image we did earlier and let's just take a look at what we have to work with. We created three layers, remember that we had on the bottom this.
