While the basic technique of brush dipping gets the job done, it is destructive. That is, it permanently alters the original photograph. But you were working on a copy, weren't you? You should if you weren't. A superior technique is to keep your expressive brush work on separate layers. This is the non-destructive approach and it comes with several benefits. Let's take a look. Now first of all, you have to realize that, as we looked at a little in the previous video. You must have an application that understands how to pick up underlying color. It can be separate on a layer, and that's ideally what we want. But some applications' brush engines don't allow that. You have to actually work on the image itself. In that case, what I'll do is just make copies of the image. And work on the copies where I can. Painter happens to be especially good at this. It was designed from the ground up to be able to pick up underlying color, and it's invested in I'd say a good 85-90% of their brushes…
