About Perl
- [Voiceover] Perl is the original modern scripting language. Developed in 1987 by Larry Wall as a more practical alternative to shell scripting, Perl borrows features from other Unix utilities like sed and awk, as well as from the C programming language. Perl was designed to be easy to use for both lightweight solutions to simple problems and for larger, more complex utilities. Perl 5 was first released in 1994, and has grown to become a full-featured object oriented development environment suitable for large systems as well as these simple, smaller projects that Perl was originally designed for. Today, Perl 5 is commonly used for a variety of common tasks, including system administration, database systems, content management, and website development. Perl is considered a high-level, general purpose language, suitable for system administration, text processing, database management, and related activities.
