- Before we jump into the test print process, I want to share with you a technique for understanding your negatives a little bit better. All the years I've done this I've never really been able to visualize how a negative is going to print by strictly examining the negative. So by making a contact print we can generate little thumbnail sized images that will allow us to make a decision on which images might be worth pursuing. We have a roll of film here that has been shot and processed. If you want to learn more about that, I'd suggest you watch my course Shooting and Processing Black and White Film. These negatives are in a negative sleeve. The sleeves serve to protect them and it also keeps them flat and in a nice manageable package. We're gonna put this on the enlarger stage and turn on the enlarger light and you can see that the lit area does not cover the size of this negative sheet.
