- Okay, we're ready to go. We've got a stable base for our enlarger; it's in place. I had a fun time last night going through some old negatives and I was reminded of one of the beauties of black and white film is its permanence. And I've picked one from about 30 years ago to use as the inaugural print for this home darkroom. We've got the light source here which is gonna shine through a filter and then be focused with a series of lenses onto the negative itself. I've got the negative in the carrier and I'm gonna blow the last little bit of dust off of it. It's over 30 years old, you know. Slide it back into the machine. Lock it in place. I'm gonna close the lens down two stops, but before I do that, I'm gonna double check and make sure I have focus the way I want it with the grain-enhancing focuser. And that is great. The thing about the grain enlarger is if the grain is sharp you know the print is gonna be sharp. You wanna do that with the lens wide open 'cause you get the brightest…
