Exploring the enlarger, the exposure tools, and the timer
- I want to start out by talking to you about the equipment you'll need in your home darkroom. The first and most important component is the enlarger. In a lot of ways, it's a fairly simple device. It consists of a light source, a simple bulb that shines through a filter chamber where you can control contrast. That light gets focused on a negative that's held in place by the negative carrier. Underneath that will be an enlarging lens that focuses the light on the paper that's on the baseboard held in position by an easel. The duration of the exposure is controlled by an enlarging timer, which precisely controls the length of the exposure. To go into a little bit more depth, there's a huge variety of types of enlargers, both in size and scale. One of the big determiners of the size of the enlarger is what format of film you're going to be working with. This enlarger is capable of anything from 35 millimeter to six by eight centimeter film.
