- As you can see, we were able to successfully create a home darkroom and generate a black and white enlargement. Just to guide you on further steps, cost-wise, you'd be surprised at how inexpensive it was. Though the enlarger we used cost over $1,100 new, I just looked on eBay and found several listed for around $100. Total cost of the project would be under $500, looking at the modifications we made. As far as ongoing expenses, your paper will cost anywhere from $.50 to $1 a sheet, depending on what brand you buy, assuming you're working on an eight by 10 size. Obviously, if you go up to a larger paper size, it's gonna get a little bit more expensive. The chemistry we used to get started cost less than $30, the developing trays and all the other things that we put in there, the developing trays, we're looking at $10 a piece, the timer we found used for $50.
